AKDQ stands for Aluminum Killed Drawing Quality. It is a type of killed carbon steel produced by adding aluminum to molten steel before it is cast. The aluminum reacts with dissolved oxygen and removes it from the melt, which prevents the gas pockets and surface inclusions that form in standard "rimmed" steel as it solidifies. The result is a fully deoxidized steel with a uniform internal structure, consistent grain size, and a clean surface ideal for drawing, stamping, and roll-forming.

When that killed carbon steel is rolled into strip, slit, and formed into tube per ASTM A513, the finished product is AKDQ steel tubing. It carries the same forming and welding advantages as the parent material: high formability, predictable behavior under deep draws, and a surface that takes paint, powder coat, and chrome plating without telegraphing defects. The short version: if the part will be deep drawn, welded with TIG or oxy-acetylene, or finished in a way that shows the surface, AKDQ is the right call. If the part is structural or hidden, standard cold-rolled steel tubing is usually the more economical choice.

The aluminum killing process matters most at the weld. In rimmed or partially deoxidized steel, residual oxygen reacts with carbon during welding and forms carbon monoxide gas. That gas creates porosity in the weld bead, which weakens the joint and results in visible defects in finished welds.

AKDQ has had its oxygen removed at the steelmaking stage, so there is nothing left to outgas. TIG welds run cleaner. Oxy-acetylene joints stay sound. MIG welds produce consistent, defect-free beads even on visible seams. For exhaust components, HVAC assemblies, furniture frames, and any application where the weld will be inspected, painted, or seen, this is a significant advantage.
